In 1922 Walter Twetten and his brother Seymour opened a furniture store on Grand Avenue in Spencer, Iowa. Despite devastating damage to the store during the Spencer fire of 1931 and shortages of home furnishings following the Great Depression and postwar WWII, business boomed.
After decades of providing northwest Iowa with fine quality furniture and floor coverings, Walter and his wife Laurene brought their son, Jerry, into the family business in 1955. Jerry was instrumental in establishing an interior design studio offering client-focused design assistance for both residential and commercial projects.
In 1967 a new building was built at 120 East Fifth Street, with showrooms featuring the comfortable home-like groupings that reflect the "casual elegance" for which we are still known for today.

In November of 2004, Jerry and Sandy opened a second design studio at 26th and Minnesota in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to better serve its growing clientele. Lead Designer Teresa Truog was tasked with coordinating the opening of its second location and began serving Twetten's loyal customer base along with Senior Designer Ann Hanson and Lead Designer Sarah Larson out of its second studio location.
Several key changes have occurred within the company in the past 10 years. Having spent 87 years of dedicated design service in Spencer, Iowa, in May of 2009, Twetten's Interior Design moved their studio to 18th Street in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Upon announcing his retirement in 2013, Jerry Twetten needed to look no further than his two Sioux Falls-based designers, Teresa Truog and Sarah Larson, to carry on the Twetten's legacy he had helped develop during his 59 years in the industry. Teresa and Sarah became its trusted owners for both locations in 2014. In early 2016, a historical building in downtown Spirit Lake was purchased and underwent extensive renovations before moving its 18th Street studio into this new space in May of that year. Our Iowa and South Dakota locations continue to ensure the Twetten's tradition of exceptional design and customer service endures.

This commitment has culminated in achieving remarkable client loyalty and referrals, resulting in a significant portion of our client base being 2nd and 3rd generation families whose parents and grandparents were Twetten's clients.
